What is a serger and how is it used?

A serger is a specialized sewing machine that trims, edges, and sews fabric simultaneously, often used for tasks like edging, hemming, or seaming. Unlike a regular sewing machine, a serger employs loopers fed by multiple thread cones instead of a bobbin, creating secure seams with thread loops. While advantageous for specific projects, the cost and limited need for serged seams often make owning one impractical.
