Summer Reading Fun!

Activities, challenges, prizes and lots of fun all summer long.

Did you know that over 2,000 kids register for our Summer Reading Fun activities each year?

If you are looking for a summer of programs, challenges, activities, awesome prizes and library fun, join us this year!

SRC - Little Dippers

Beginning July 2nd, stop in at any WPL or Waterloo EarlyOn location to pick up your Little Dippers (ages 6 and under) passport filled with exciting daily activities for you to do at home. Your passport comes complete with stickers to mark off all of the adventures you have completed.

When you have completed 10 activities, visit the library and pick a prize from our treasure box.

Grownups! When your Little Dipper’s passport is complete, bring it in for your chance to win as well. Caregivers will be entered into a special draw of their own!

New passports will be released in July and August so the fun can continue all summer long.

There are TWO great ways to have a Cosmic Reading Adventure at WPL this summer with kids in JK and up. Participate in either Adventure or better yet, BOTH!

Reading Adventure #1

  1. Between June 24 and August 2, pick up a Cosmic Reading Journal from the WPL location of your choice or print one at home by visiting
  2. Throughout the summer, record the great reading you are doing in your reading journal. Everything counts! Books, magazines, ebooks, graphic novels…
  3. Between August 19 and September 6, return your completed Cosmic Reading Journal to any WPL location for your chance to be entered into our incredible GRAND PRIZE DRAW!

Reading Adventure #2

  1. Between July 2 and August 16, register to participate in the Cosmic Reading Adventure program at the WPL location of your choice.
  2. Visit the library often and remember to check in at our Ground Control desk when you do. When you check in with Ground Control 7 times before August 21 you will receive a special invitation to our Space Party on August 22. With prizes, treats, performers and surprises, you do not want to miss this party!
  3. But wait! There’s more!! Throughout the summer we have planned three (3!) Super Nova Surprise Weeks where everyone checking-in at Ground Control will land themselves a fun surprise or a chance to win something amazing.
  4. If that is not exciting enough, there will be daily activities happening at Ground Control all summer long. Stop in any time to participate in activities, crafts, games or challenges (they change all the time!)

Join a space team. Earn points. Win the galaxy. Are you ready to rule the universe?

Starting July 2nd, register for the Great Space Race (for kids in grades 4 to 7) in person or at later in June.

When you sign up, you will be randomly assigned to one of 4 powerful space agencies: Team Bondar, Team Hadfield, Team MacLean or Team Payette.

From July 2 to August 12 the race is on to earn as many points as possible for your team. Check on your team’s standings at any WPL location as our leaderboards broadcast updates in real-time, letting you know which team is leading the pack.

Earn points for your team by:

  • Logging in to your Great Space Race profile to check-in every day
  • Completing daily challenges (updated daily in your profile)
  • Keeping us up to date with what you are reading
  • Attending incredible WPL programs
  • Finding points drop caches in the library
  • Beating in-library challenges (like escape rooms!)

Earn 150 points for your team and you will be invited to attend Astronaut Training Camp on August 13. There will be pizza, prizes, challenges and of course, a celebration for the winning space team!
